Walking with Monica

Yesterday I took a walk through the skyways and subways to the library for a new selection of tunes.  (I LOVE THE LIBRARY, but that is not the topic of this post... will save for another post).  As I was coming back, there was a slow moving person using a walker in front of me who paused to let someone go in front of them knowing they were taking longer than most people.  I couldn't tell if the person was male or female and didn't even think about it.  I just waited behind the walker and noted the patience and considerate nature of the person.

I had to go through a succession of doors and ended up holding one for 'The Walker' and then noticed SHE was a young looking African woman.  I think she was actually from Africa although the topic didn't come up because she had quite the accent.  :)  OF COURSE after I held the door for her I asked her if she needed help getting anywhere because we have lots of visitors in Med City and many times they don't know how to get around in the skyways or subways.  She said she was looking for downtown so she could get on a bus.  She had broken her foot recently slipping on some ice and it was too cold to walk outside without her really warm boots which no longer fit on her foot with her foot brace.  So  I told her I would escort her to the bus stop. :)  SWEET!  I get to talk to someone new!

I found out she lives in Iowa, but she's here for a couple months with her 2 kids getting treatment for something.  She HATES men!  (that was a surprise!)  And her name is Monica.  She's determined to give her children (one boy and one girl) a better foundation than she had.  She's going to teach them how to be respectful human beings.

She probably thanked me three of four times for accompanying her to the bus stop and taking the time to talk with her.  She thought I was so accomplished for being able to work for WFMC. (That's an acronym we use sometimes - "World Famous" are the first two letters).   I told her it was no problem what-so-ever and actually quite the opposite!

My new friend Monica, I hope your day was lifted from our walk!  I know my life was enhanced by walking with Monica!
